Timms Make Over 300 New Dementia Friends

With six Dementia Champions across the firm, Timms Solicitors are proud to have made 334 new dementia friends so far this year.

The solicitors with offices in Derby, Ashby, Burton and Swadlincote first heard about the Alzheimers Society initiative 3 years ago and were keen to get involved. The Dementia Friends programme aims to change people’s perceptions of dementia, transforming the way the nation thinks, acts and talks about the condition.

Championed by Partner, Darren Perry, Timms initially involved their staff who unanimously agreed to undertake the information session to become a Dementia Friend. Several members of the team asked to train as Dementia Champions which the firm fully supported.

Darren comments ‘It is important for us to be involved in spreading the word within our local communities. Being a Dementia Friend is about having an understanding of all the small things you can do to help people living with the condition. Businesses and organisations who work with the public have a responsibility too which is why we wanted to get involved’.

Earlier this year, Timms played an instrumental role in Swadlincote gaining ‘Dementia Friendly Community’ status. A Dementia Friendly Community involves everyone from the local corner shop and hairdresser to the local council, sharing part of the responsibility for ensuring that people with dementia feel understood, valued and able to contribute to their community.
