Doctors should always consider meningitis as they should be aware that children with bacterial meningitis commonly present with non-specific symptoms and signs, including fever, vomiting, irritability, and upper respiratory tract symptoms. They should listen to parent’s concerns, arrange a reassessment if necessary, and ensuring parents know what to do if a child becomes more unwell in the meantime. GPs should transfer children and young people with suspected bacterial meningitis to hospital as an emergency by telephoning 999.
