Learning At Work Week - Connor-Ball Wood

As ‘Learning at Work Week’ continues, we speak to Trainee Solicitor Connor-Ball Wood about what it’s like to work and learn at Timms….

A Little Bit About Me

My name is Connor Ball-Wood and I’m a Trainee Solicitor at Timms Solicitors. I completed my GCSEs and A Levels at Ecclesbourne School and then went on to complete my Law Degree and LPC at The University of Derby. I’m a huge Derby County fan and have followed them since I was 7. I also enjoy anything, and everything Marvel related.

I started my Training Contract with Timms in January 2022 and I am due to qualify in January 2024. I am currently completing my first seat in Conveyancing and am based at the Burton office.

What I Learned From The Interview Process

The first interview gave me an opportunity to talk about myself, demonstrate my skills but also showcase how I could contribute to the Firm. Interviews are usually perceived as the interviewers firing questions at the interviewee, however, this process was the other way around in many aspects and allowed me to talk about myself and present in my own way.

The assessment day involved several activities involving individual work as well as team tasks. This was a different challenge compared to the interview as it involved me having to demonstrate my individual skills whilst showcasing my ability to work well in a team and provide members of the group with the chance to get involved in discussions.

What Has Been The Most Challenging Aspect So Far?

I would say that one of the most challenging aspects so far would be starting at the firm where I did not know anyone and getting straight down to learning and working. However, everyone I have worked with so far has made that experience so much easier. Being given tasks early on in my seat was a challenge, however something I have relished.

What Has Been The Most Surprising Aspect So Far?

I’ve been surprised with myself about how quickly I’ve picked things up. The first few weeks involved me doing lots of shadowing, however, soon after I was beginning to be more independent with work.

What I Have Learnt So Far

All things conveyancing. When I first started the seat, I was familiar with the process of a sale and purchase, but I now feel confident that with what I have learnt I would be able to progress a sale and purchase file from start to end.

What I Have Enjoyed The Most So Far

I’ve really enjoyed being able to take on my own files – this has been the most rewarding aspect of my training contact so far.

How I Have Found Working At Timms

The firm has been great since I started. Everyone has been so welcoming and friendly. One thing I’ve really been impressed with about the firm is how it likes to involve everyone in marketing, social events and networking events. There has also been a lot of support and supervision which has been very reassuring.

Where To Next?

It’s not been confirmed where I am going next, however I have feeling of where it might be. Wherever it is, I’m looking forward to getting stuck into something new again.
