Clinical Negligence – Neonatal Hypoglycaemia Claim

A neonatal hypoglycaemia claim can be for substantial damages for severe or long-term hypoglycaemia leading to brain damage as a result of medical negligence.

Infants with high risk factors include those with blood infection (sepsis), endocrine disorders, such as low thyroid hormone production (hypothyroidism), hypoxia shortly after birth, a mother with diabetes, who are large or small for gestational age, were premature, whose mothers had chorioamnionitis or infection at birth and with intrauterine growth restriction.

They should have a blood test to measure blood sugar levels every few hours after birth, and blood tests should continue until their blood sugar level is consistently normal.

A neonatal hypoglycaemia claim can still be brought with legal aid. Children under sixteen are normally financially eligible as they are assessed on their own finances rather than on their parents’ finances which are irrelevant in deciding the child’s eligibility for public funding.
