International Women’s Day – Who Inspires You?

This week we celebrated International Women’s Day and our team have been thinking about who inspires them. Today we hear from Timms Family Law Solicitor, Melissa Knight…

This year I have chosen Princess Diana – the people’s princess.

Why Is Princess Diana Inspirational To Me?

I feel like I could write a book about why I have chosen Princess Diana as my inspirational woman of choice but here are five facts which I think make her a perfect role model and advocate for all women…

1. Her Charity Work

Princess Diana was renowned for her charity work. She was determined to change the world for the better being, especially keen in helping those who were homeless, those who were the victim of domestic abuse, raising awareness about leprosy and changing the stigma associated with HIV ( opening the UK’s first aids hospital ward). It is understood that she was the patron to over 100 charities.

2. She Wasn’t Afraid To Challenge The Norms

She was also known to be a bit of a royal rebel and certainly not afraid to challenge the Royal norms and values, instead preferring a more approachable style. Princess Diana caused a stir when she omitted to say the word ‘obey’ during her wedding vows as a strive towards gender equality. Furthermore, she was the first royal to give birth in a hospital rather than to opt for a home birth.

3. A Committed and Loving Mum

She was an extremely committed and loving Mum to Princess William and Prince Harry and keen to give them a taste of a normal life. Examples include: –

  1. Opting to send the boys to school rather than the usual royal stance of children being home -schooled
  2. Taking part in Prince Harry and Prince William’s school sport day offering a famous sprint finish which ended in the second-place title
  3. There is a rumour that she would let Prince William and Prince Harry enjoy a McDonalds or two
4. She Believed That Women Could Make A Difference

Princess Diana truly believed that women could make a difference in the world often commenting “ this needs a woman’s touch”. She was never shy of being true to herself and voicing her beliefs.

5. She was an absolute fashionista

She was an absolute fashionista and the tiara didn’t stop her rocking the 90’s oversized jumper and cycling shorts. I think it is also pretty amazing that she often auctioned her dresses off to raise money for the charities that she was working with. I also love that she chose her own engagement ring from a catalogue.
