A little bit about me

My name is Sophie Wildsmith and I am a Trainee Solicitor at Timms Solicitors. I obtained a first class law degree in 2021 at Nottingham Trent University and I was awarded a distinction for my Masters of Law and Legal Practice Course at The University of Law in 2023.

I began my journey at Timms in September 2022 as a paralegal in the Conveyancing team. I later secured a training contract with Timms in March 2024 and I am due to qualify as a solicitor in September 2025. I am currently completing my first seat with the Wills and Probate Team at the Swadlincote Office.

The application process

The first stage of the application process was to submit a CV and covering letter to the firm. There was then an assessment day where we were required to conduct a presentation about ourselves. Following the presentation there was an interview and a group exercise on professional conduct.

Assessment day nerves are normal, but thorough preparation helped me to settle into it. This was a good opportunity to be assessed in a more rounded way on factors including previous experience, personal attributes, your ability to answer questions put to you and your ability to work as a team.

What has been the most challenging aspect so far?

I would say that the most challenging aspect so far has been finding my feet in a new area of law. Having worked in Conveyancing for two and a half years previously, I felt comfortable within this area. Beginning my first seat in a different area of law was definitely a big change however, I soon realised that you are not expected to pick everything up within a matter of days (as that would be impossible!) and as long as you are keen to learn and take every opportunity that you can to do so, you will begin pick things up a lot quicker than you think.

What have I learnt so far?

I have now started taking on my own clients for Wills and Lasting Powers of Attorney along with assisting my colleagues with other matters such as deputyships, applications for Grants of Probate and the administration of estates. The support I receive from our experienced team means I am learning more and more every day.

What have I enjoyed so far?

I really enjoy the variety of work that is involved in Wills and Probate. I quickly discovered that every Will is very different and that even small changes in the wording of clauses can make a big difference to the effect that the clause has. It’s really satisfying being able to draft bespoke clauses to ensure that client’s Wills are in accordance with their instructions.

Where to next?

I am looking forward to developing my skills and experience within the Wills and Probate team before finding out where my next seat will be in September.
