Timms Solicitors has marked its 125th anniversary with the unveiling of the external refurbishment of its first offices in Swadlincote – the town where the firm was founded as a family law firm in 1892.

The front elevation of the office in West Street has been restored to its former glory with support from the South Derbyshire Heritage Grant scheme which ensures sympathetic alterations to key buildings as part of the regeneration of the Swadlincote conservation area.

Restoration work on the two-storey building has included attractive bay windows, glazed brickwork and fretwork. This reflects the Arts and Crafts Movement-inspired design of the original two shops which were built in 1925 alongside the Empire Cinema.
Timms Solicitors have maintained its High Street presence in Swadlincote since its launch and moved into the West Street building in late Forties.

The firm shared one of the units with Derbyshire Building Society downstairs until it took over the whole building some decades later and next door was the well-known CJ Gadsby tobacconist and sweet shop.

Timms Solicitors has expanded over its 125 year history and now also has offices in Burton-on-Trent, Ashby-de-la-Zouch and Derby’s Cathedral Quarter – specialising in private and commercial law.

Timms Solicitors Managing Partner Fiona Moffat said: “We are delighted with the restoration work to our Swadlincote office which is now in keeping with the vastly improving look of the town’s conservation area.

“It has been fascinating to look through the old photographs mapping the history of this building from the Twenties onwards and I am sure that many people still remember the building society and shop that were here in the Sixties.

“Timms Solicitors has always been committed to being part of the local communities in which we work and particularly in Swadlincote where we have always been active members of the town, particularly with the Dementia Friends initiative and sponsoring the first Swadlincote Community Awards.

“We were keen to be part of the Heritage Scheme to bring this building back to its former glory and it’s extremely fitting that this project has been completed during our 125th anniversary year.”
