Making A Will Aged 40 Something

Making A Will Aged 40 Something

Today for a reason unbeknown to me, I opened a marketing email from a ‘global e-commerce marketplace’! I’m not particularly looking for an alpacka experience or even a discounted MOT but curiosity got the better of me….. third offer down and I’m suddenly interested…..‘Make a Will’ for £10!!!

Now before I’m shot down, there will be an audience for this and I’m not going to criticise #bekind. What I will share is my experience.

Making A Will Aged 40 Something

I’m 40 something, at times act like I’m 22 and at others feel like 92, but last year I decided it was time to make a Will and be a proper grown up. After all, I am married, have two children and own my own home. I thought that if something did happen to me, it would all be fairly simple and my husband would get everything and sort it all out.

Making a Will Aged 40 Something – Questions & Answers

However, by meeting an experienced Wills and Probate Solicitor and looking at a variety of scenarios, it made us realise that this is one of the most important documents we could organise in our lifetime; What if my husband remarried? What about my art collection? What would happen if something happened to the two of us together? Who would look after the children? There were a host of questions.

But no matter how many questions we asked and how many different scenarios we talked about, the guidance we were given made us feel in control and confident that we were making good, solid plans for the girls. There was definitely no such thing as a silly question.

Making a Will Aged 40 Something – Surely It’s All A Bit Sad!

It wasn’t all doom and gloom either as one would imagine, we didn’t choose any hymns and had a good chuckle as well as a cry.

We were given time and space to consider our options and after a few emails, we met our solicitor again and signed our Wills.

Making a Will Aged 40 Something – Weighing Up The Options

So, for those of you who are considering a making a Will, have a think about the two different options; a personal, tailored approach (to the value of a couple of family meals out) or an online template for £10. Both have their merits but consider your circumstances, your family and your wishes.

Our leaflet ‘Making a Will‘ may answer any questions you may have. Alternatively, feel free to take a look at the Wills & Probate section of our website or even better, give one of my colleagues a call on freephone 0800 011 6666.
